Vintage African Art hand-carved two faced wooden sculpture with exquisite detail signed by original artist, D. Stroy 72* (1972). This is known as a Janus Face Carving. Across various African societies, the Janus motif holds deep cultural significance. In West Africa, particularly among the Yoruba of Nigeria, these dual-faced figures often represent the dual nature of life—past and future, life and death, male and female, or the spiritual and the physical world. For the Bakongo people of the Congo region, the dual faces can symbolize the unity between the ancestors and the living, watching over from both sides of existence.
